To protect streets during the spring thaw, Burnsville follows Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) load limits. Heavy vehicles must follow posted weight limits until restrictions are lifted.

Permits and Exceptions

Emergency or limited exceptions may be granted. Most vehicles — including garbage trucks and construction equipment — must comply. To request a permit, contact Public Works at 952-895-4550 or pw@burnsvillemn.gov.

Winter in Burnsville: What to Know

We’re here to keep our 225 miles of roads and 135 miles of sidewalks and trails safe all winter long. Here’s how it works and how you can help:

Snow Plowing

  • Our teams constantly monitor the forecast
  • Crews start early to clear every street; main roads will be prioritized for emergency vehicles
  • Sidewalks and trails are plowed the same day, starting with schools, transit stops and busy areas
  • Big or back-to-back storms may take longer—thanks for your patience!

When will my street be plowed?

Streets are cleared in this order:
1. Main thoroughfares
2. Commercial and industrial areas
3. Collector streets and steep grades
4. Residential streets, including cul-de-sacs (note: we may make a quick loop prior to plowing a cul-de-sac in its entirety.)

Our goal is to keep major roads open at all times. Please don’t shovel or blow snow into the street—it’s dangerous and against City Code.

If Plows Cause Damage

If you feel a plow has damaged your mailbox, sod, turf, landscaping or irrigation, reach out to our Public Works team so we can assess the damage and share your options.

Will the City clear the snow at the end of my driveway?

Residents are responsible for clearing their driveways. If you need help, DARTS connects residents to snow removal and other services.

Adopt-A-Hydrant

Help out our firefighters by adopting a hydrant! When firefighters are digging – time keeps ticking. Our Firefighters need a three-foot area clear of snow and ice shoveled around each fire hydrant and a three-foot wide path leading to them from the street.

Safety Tips

  • No street parking during snow events (and remember—no overnight parking 2–6 a.m. all year)
  • Stay at least 75 feet behind plows
  • Keep garbage/recycling bins out of the street
  • Don’t shovel or blow snow back onto roads or sidewalks
